Capturing one of Victoria’s secret waterfalls and a well-known swimming spot among the locals, Polly McQuinn Falls is a painting that incorporates the beauty and serenity of a real location. The falls is actually partly man made, with a concrete barrier at the top of the falls to prevent flooding of local townships further downstream.
Local legend has it that sometime in the 1860’s, Polly was returning home on his horse late one night when he fell into the flooded river and drowned. Rescue members state that despite complicated searches, neither Polly or his horse was found. Rumours state that the ghost of Polly McQuinn has haunted the site ever since.
I painted this piece for two reasons – one being that I grew up in the area and wanted to capture something about it that I thought was peaceful and calming, and secondly, the falls here would not exist without the man-made concrete wall. It was a good metaphor for taking medication.
